About us

Founded in 1984, David Hannent first set up his practice after years of experience in the public and private sectors.  Hannent Chartered Surveyors was set up to deliver a holistic and rounded approach to the Chartered Surveying profession, and has been delivering a high standard of service to thousands of clients ever since. 

David’s son, Paul Hannent is now the director of the company, while David remains affiliated with the business as a consultant.  Paul trained with the London Local Authorities to qualify as a building surveyor, and subsequently worked as a consultant and lecturer before joining the family business. 

Hannent Chartered surveyors started in Kent, but has grown to have offices in London, Kent and more recently, West Yorkshire.  From our six offices staffed with multidisciplinary team members and consultants, we can draw on a broad range of expertise and qualifications, including:

Committed to CPD

Continuing professional development is essential to keep our team current and to deliver the highest standards of service. Not only do we attend events, courses and seminars and disseminate the information through the company, we also run our own in-house training to ensure that our team far exceeds the requirements of our professional bodies. As part of our engagement with professional bodies, we also work with universities and other organisations to mentor and develop newcomers to the industry.

  • Paul Hannent

    MANAGING DIRECTOR

    Paul originated as a Building Control Surveyor which has given him excellent grounding since working as a Design Manager, Building Surveyor, Designer, H&S Consultant and Lecturer. He has always maintained his currency and competency as a Building Control Surveyor and feels it is an essential part of his practice.

    Paul has interests in post-occupancy studies, Town Planning, design management for achieving low-energy combined with buildability and the optimisation of relationships between project teams, putting into practice his academic qualifications in Building Surveying, Management and Architecture.

    Paul keeps himself abreast of changes in the profession ad contributes to it by lecturing at universities, especially the UCEM and contributing to the professional bodies. He mentors for the RICS on their Senior Professional Route and works to raise awareness of learning disabilities in professional practice.

  • Barry Farge

    DIRECTOR

    Barry joined Hannent Chartered Surveyors at the end of October 2010. He took a short break from 2014 to 2017 whilst working for Rider Levitt Bucknall, bringing with him a wide range of experience in both the public and private sector.

    With over 50 years in the construction industry he has gained extensive experience within all market sectors working as a Designer, Supervisor, Surveyor and Principal Designer roles on numerous projects.

    Barry has also completed a period of secondment into London Underground Limited (LUL) working within the ‘Connect’ project and has extensive knowledge of general people and project management, method statements, risk assessments, health and safety and assurance processes.

  • Ruth Tazey

    ASSISTANT SURVEYOR

    Ruth joined the team in October 2021 as a part-time Trainee Building Surveyor and has quickly become a valuable member of the team. She is motivated to learn and is working towards becoming a qualified Building Surveyor.

    Ruth is a graduate of Environmental Science and her background is within the scientific industry. She has held several technical positions including Nuclear Analyst. Her analytical thinking is an asset to herself and the firm.

    She is observant and inquisitive, able to work quickly and accurately, enjoys a challenge and strives to deliver excellent customer service.

  • David Hannent

    CONSULTANT

    David founded Hannent Chartered Surveyors in 1984 under the founding brand of PMC.  Before he started the company, David worked for 10 years as Chief Quantity Surveyor (QS) at Dover District Council, and prior to that, he worked in private practice and Local Authority in London. David invented the National Schedule of Rates, a system that is now used in public sector pricing across the country.

    In his years building up the company, as a QS David has overseen a wide variety of project work, from new build projects to ancient property, housing estates to hotels and restaurants and medical and dental facilities. He also acts as an expert witness in alternative dispute resolution. He relishes “rescuing” failed contracts.

    David has now stepped back from his role in the company as a director and works as a consultant to the practice, providing valuable expertise, with over 50 years post qualification experience, including over 40 years since achieving Fellowship.

  • Charlotte Goodwin

    ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

    Charlotte has been working in construction since graduating from the University of Leeds in 2008. Having begun her career as a trainee project manager for construction projects in the waste industry, she then progressed into property development.

    As director of her own property development company, she gained extensive experience of building pathology, valuations and a practical knowledge of construction processes and techniques which has been recognised by both the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB) and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). She now uses this knowledge base to deliver building surveys, valuations and schedules of condition.

    In addition to working in the civilian construction industry, Charlotte also has been an Army Reservist for 22 years in the corps of the Royal Engineers.  During this time she has progressed the rank of Major and gained wide ranging military construction experience in both in the UK and on overseas operations.

  • Rosie Jansen-Bowen

    ASSISTANT SURVEYOR/TECHNICAL ADMINISTRATOR

    Rosie joined Hannent Chartered Surveyors as a graduate trainee in 2017 and has since built up a broad base of knowledge of construction and surveying. During her eight years with Hannent Chartered Surveyors she has become an integral part of the company, being at the front line of customer service and delivering vital administrative support as well as conducting work on site.

     She combines the expertise she has gained through working in the business with the skills she gained from her MSc to deliver a broad range support to the company; using her analytical skills to deliver quality control and her experience of research methodologies in expert witness cases. As part of her varied role, she also conducts residential property valuations and provides assistance in the delivery of building surveys. 

    Rosie continues to develop her technical knowledge through on-going CPD and is currently working towards her AssocRICS qualification.

  • Myles Brett

    ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

    Myles is a experienced professional with over 25 years in the construction industry, specialising in business management, quantity surveying, contract administration, and dispute resolution. Starting his career with main contractors, Myles transitioned to consultancy 10 years ago, bringing a global perspective from working on projects in the UK, Europe, Middle East, and America. His expertise spans managing small to large-scale projects and complex contractual issues.

    Myles holds a Master’s in Business Administration, alongside postgraduate qualifications in Contract Law and Arbitration. He is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Building, a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and an Associate of the Association for Project Safety. With a proven track record in overseeing projects and resolving disputes Myles is known for his dedication to quality and service.
